This research examines whether the convergence of Japanese accounting standards with International financial report standards (IFRSs) has enhanced the country’s accounting quality. We conducted the research by citing data from listed companies in Tokyo Stock Exchange and some other securities markets, and analyzing the consolidated financial statements in terms of earning management, immediate recognition of potential loss, and value relevance of accounting information. We try to proceed our analysis in a time series approach by dividing last decade into three periods, years of 1999-2001, 2002-2004, 2005-2007, and to see if the accounting quality has been improved with the introduction of the international convergence accounting standards. Our research indicates that there is no improvement in Japanese firms accounting quality in the last decade even though a large number of accounting standards which are considered to have convergence with IFRSs have been introduced or revised.
